Submission Guidelines

• The successful submission will be of short fiction or creative non-fiction that is unique and imaginative. The HICCUPS is looking for stories that range from the dark and absurd to the humorous and optimistic. Sometimes the best combine all four!

• Be mindful of the season: submissions made now will be considered for the winter issue of the magazine and preference will be given to those that embrace the season. Pieces submitted out of ‘their season’ may, however, be considered for future issues.

• The editorial process of this magazine adopts a Catholic ethos. In line with this ethos, pieces that are obscene and vulgar, and pieces which condone indecency, will be refused. The editor recognises that immorality is often worked into the narrative of a story without condoning it, and such submissions are encouraged.

• We request your original, previously unpublished work. By submitting your work you warrant that the work is original and has not been published elsewhere and that the work does not infringe on the rights of any third party or contain unlawful content.

• Simultaneous submissions (submitting your story to other publications while awaiting our response) are encouraged. Please notify the magazine by email immediately if your work has been accepted elsewhere so that we can withdraw it from our pool.

• Multiple submissions are allowed.

• Please do not submit any stories written using AI tools. By submitting your work you are affirming that there is no AI generated material in your work.

In the email include:

• The title of your piece and whether it’s fiction or creative non-fiction;

• Your first and second name, and a line or two about yourself (if you wish);

• An attachment containing your piece (.pdf, .doc, .docx).

Contributors whose work is selected will be paid a fee of £100 for publication of their work in the first issue of The HICCUPS magazine. Contact info@thehiccupsmagazine.com for more details.

By submitting their work, contributors consent to their story/memoir being considered for publication in a print issue of The HICCUPS. If successful, the contributor’s name (or pen name) and story title will also be used in marketing the magazine.
